Gradual reduction in the STOP score in patients with obstructive sleep apnea undergoing oral appliance therapy

چکیده
Purpose In the treatment of obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), there is not yet a convenient tool for deciding whether mandibular advancement oral appliance (OA) adequately adjusted or when to perform post-treatment sleep-testing. We hypothesized that gradual reduction in STOP (snoring, tiredness during daytime, observed apnea, high blood pressure) score, i.e., fewer Yes responses questionnaire, patients undergoing OA could be an indicator better adjustment and, thus, best timing follow-up polysomnography.

Oral appliance therapy for obstructive sleep apnea.
Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is a common disorder characterized by repetitive, complete or partial closure of the upper airway during sleep, resulting in sleep fragmentation and oxygen desaturation. The disorder causes significant morbidity, particularly in terms of impairment of daytime functioning and the impact this has on quality of life. There is also evidence that links OSA to long-term ...

BACKGROUND Despite the advances in the treatment of obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) with mandibular advancement appliances (MAA), their effectiveness is dependent on the patients compliance. Our aims were to evaluate the long-term adherence to MAA therapy and patients experiences of the treatment in OSA. MATERIAL AND METHODS Sixty-nine patients (52 males, 17 females; Mean age: 54.4±10.8 years) ...
متن کاملThe role of oral appliance therapy in the treatment of obstructive sleep apnea.
The development of oral appliance treatment for OSA represents an important step in the management of this disease. Randomized, controlled clinical trials have shown them to be an effective treatment option for snoring and OSA in some patients, particularly patients with less severe OSA or simple snoring and patients who have failed other treatment modalities. Although oral appliances are not a...

The case of a 40-year-old male patient with obstructive sleep apnea syndrome (OSAS) is reported, with emphasis on treatment with a dental appliance. This therapeutic approach, which has been focused on recent research, has as its objective, the posturing of the mandibule and, consequently, the tongue more anteriorly, thus in turn leading to an increase in the posterior oropharyngeal airway spac...
متن کاملOral appliance treatment for obstructive sleep apnea: an update.
Oral appliances (OA) have emerged as an alternative to continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) for obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) treatment. The most commonly used OA reduces upper airway collapse by advancing the mandible (OAm). There is a strong evidence base demonstrating OAm improve OSA in the majority of patients, including some with more severe disease. However OAm are not efficacious f...
